Conegliano Prosecco Superiore D.O.C.G. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

The appellation covers a hilly area in the province of Treviso, in the Veneto region, between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. Its production zone comprises fifteen communes: Conegliano, San Vendemiano, Colle Umberto, Vittorio Veneto, Tarzo, Cison di Valmarino, San Pietro di Feletto, Refrontolo, Susegana, Pieve di Soligo, Farra di Soligo, Follina, Miane, Vidor and Valdobbiadene. The production regulations reserve the vineyards for hillside sites, excluding valley floors and plains. The soils, shaped first by retreating glaciers and later by the sea, combine marine-origin marl and sandstone with morainic, clay-iron deposits. The steepest slopes, farmed on narrow terraces known as ciglioni, have been inscribed since 2019 on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the name Colline del Prosecco di Conegliano e Valdobbiadene. The glera grape forms the backbone of the wines, complemented by up to 15% verdiso, bianchetta trevigiana, perera or glera lunga.

The wines of this appellation

The appellation produces mainly sparkling wines (spumante superiore), along with semi-sparkling (frizzante) and, more rarely, still versions, all made primarily from the glera grape. Their colour is straw yellow of varying intensity and brightness; the sparkling wines show a fine, persistent mousse. The nose is fresh and distinctive, offering notes of apple, pear and citrus, sometimes lifted by floral nuances. On the palate they are fresh, harmonious and fruity, with a clean, characterful finish. Sugar dosage ranges from brut to dry, excluding the extra-brut and dolce styles. These are wines meant to be enjoyed young, while their aromatic freshness and liveliness remain intact. They pair readily with aperitifs, antipasti, seafood, fish and vegetable-based risottos.
