Cidre de Bretagne I.G.P. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

The geographical area of the appellation lies on the Armorican Massif. It covers the four departments of Brittany — Côtes-d'Armor, Finistère, Ille-et-Vilaine and Morbihan — together with parts of Loire-Atlantique, Maine-et-Loire and Mayenne. The oceanic climate is marked by narrow temperature ranges, strong maritime influence and abundant, regular rainfall, with temperate summers, mild winters and rare frost — conditions that favor apple trees more than vines. Only cider apples, richer in tannins than dessert apples, are used to make the cider. Breton orchards are composed of roughly half bitter and bittersweet varieties and a quarter acidulous or sour varieties, including Frequin Rouge, Kermerrien, Marie Ménard and Jeanne Renard. Introduced from Spain in the Middle Ages, these varieties have since been selected and adapted by local growers over generations.

The wines of this appellation

Cidre de Bretagne is a sparkling cider with fine bubbles and a light foam, its color ranging from pale straw to mahogany brown depending on the variety blend and the terroir: paler and more acidic in Ille-et-Vilaine, more mahogany and bitter in southern Finistère. Its aromatic profile is rich, sometimes full-bodied and rustic, sometimes marked by fruity and floral notes, occasionally enriched with spiced nuances as it ages. It is defined by the balance sought between bitterness, acidity and residual sugars from fermentation. Depending on style, there are sweet ciders (cidre doux), lower in alcohol and sweeter, and dry or off-dry ciders (brut, demi-sec), more fully fermented; cidre bouché, bottled champagne-style, shows a more pronounced natural effervescence. This cider traditionally accompanies buckwheat crêpes and galettes, an emblematic pairing of Breton cuisine, but also pairs well with seafood, fish and cheese.
