American Viticultural Area (AVA)

The California appellation covers the entire State of California, on the US West Coast, stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. It encompasses 154 distinct American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), with the California designation sitting above them as a broader origin. The climate is shaped by the Pacific Ocean: coastal areas see fog and cool temperatures, while conditions grow warmer further inland, an effect sharpened by the coastal mountain ranges that filter incoming marine air. Soils vary widely by area: alluvial and fertile in river valleys, more rocky, volcanic and well-drained at higher elevations. A very wide range of Vitis vinifera varieties is grown across the state, with cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, pinot noir, zinfandel, merlot and sauvignon blanc among the most widely planted. To carry the California appellation, a wine must be made entirely from grapes harvested within the state, a stricter rule than the one applied to other US state appellations.

Grape varieties: Vins rouges : cabernet-sauvignon, merlot, zinfandel, syrah, pinot noir. Vins blancs : chardonnay, sauvignon, chenin

The wines of this appellation

Wines carrying the California appellation come in every style: red, white, rosé and sparkling. Cabernet sauvignon-based reds are structured, with present tannins and aromas of black fruit and blackcurrant, often layered with oak and spice notes. Zinfandel yields richer, spicier wines with ripe fruit and pepper notes. Pinot noir, grown in the cooler coastal areas, gives lighter, fruitier and silkier wines. Among whites, chardonnay ranges from crisp, mineral styles to fuller, buttery, oak-aged versions, while sauvignon blanc offers aromatic wines built around citrus and stone fruit. Depending on their profile, these wines pair with grilled meats and slow-cooked dishes for the fuller-bodied reds, and with fish, shellfish and poultry for whites and rosés. The more structured styles can be kept for a few years, while the fruitier ones are best enjoyed young.
