Cairanne is a single-commune appellation in the northern part of Vaucluse, on the border with the Drôme, in the southern Rhône Valley. As its sole commune, it holds cru status among the Côtes du Rhône crus, distinguishing it from the surrounding Côtes du Rhône Villages appellations, which cover several communes. The vineyard spreads across three distinct terroirs: terraces west of the village made of pebbles, clay and fine sand; Miocene-era slopes to the north, where limestone pebbles alternate with marl; and stony, alluvial soils to the south, toward the garrigue. The climate is Mediterranean, dry and sunny, with a marked influence from the mistral wind. Red wines rely mainly on grenache, complemented by syrah, mourvèdre, cinsault and carignan. White wines, more limited in volume, are made from clairette, grenache blanc and roussanne, with bourboulenc, viognier, marsanne and picpoul as secondary varieties.

Cairanne produces mostly red wines, alongside a small share of white wine; the appellation does not produce rosé. The reds show a deep colour and aromas of red and black fruit, spice and garrigue. Their tannic structure, ranging from fine to firm depending on the blend, rests on a good balance that gives them real ageing potential and allows them to gain complexity over the years. Young, they pair well with red meats and slow-cooked dishes; with age, they suit game and matured cheeses. The whites, produced in smaller quantities, show a floral and fruity profile, sometimes with stone-fruit notes, balanced between freshness and roundness; they pair well with fish in sauce, poultry and fresh goat cheese.
