AOC Bergerac sec wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

A.O.C./A.O.P.

Bergerac sec designates the dry white wines produced within the Bergerac appellation area, which spans 90 communes in the Dordogne department, on both sides of the Dordogne valley in southwestern Périgord. The hillside soils combine rendzinas and calcareous brown soils, leached boulbène soils and gravelly clay alluvial soils along the river. The oceanic climate, softened by distance from the Atlantic coast, brings warmer summers and colder winters, with Atlantic mildness and humidity reaching inland along the Dordogne valley in spring and autumn. The white wines are based on sauvignon, sauvignon gris, sémillon and muscadelle, complemented locally by ugni blanc, chenin and ondenc. The word 'dry' is required on the label, setting these wines apart from the sweet or dessert styles also produced in the same area.

The wines of this appellation

Bergerac sec produces dry white wines, generally pale in colour, with floral and fruity aromas carried by lively acidity in which the sauvignon character often shows through. These are everyday wines, made to be drunk young, when their freshness is at its best. Some fuller-bodied cuvées, built around sémillon or muscadelle, gain roundness and develop further aromatic complexity after a few years of ageing. On the palate, tension and minerality balance a clean fruit character recalling citrus and white orchard fruit. These wines pair naturally with seafood, grilled fish, oysters, asparagus and light starters, and also match well with fresh goat cheese.
