Batroun wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Batroun is a wine region in northern Lebanon, within the coastal district of the same name, lying between the Mediterranean Sea and the first slopes of Mount Lebanon. The vines are grown on terraces along steep hillsides, in soils made up of reddish ferric clay combined with limestone banks, which favour drainage and minerality. The climate is Mediterranean, with strong sunshine; hot, dry summers are tempered by sea breezes, while winters remain mild. This coastal setting sets Batroun apart from vineyards further inland, notably those of the Bekaa Valley. Batroun is today Lebanon's second-largest wine region by production. Red varieties grown include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. White varieties include Chardonnay, Viognier, and the local Obeidi and Merweh grapes.

The wines of this appellation

Batroun produces red, white and rosé wines. The reds, based mainly on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, are full-bodied and fruit-driven, with aromas of black fruit such as blackberry and cherry, sometimes lifted by spicy, peppery notes from Cabernet Franc or Mourvèdre. Their tannic structure ranges from supple to firm depending on the blend. The whites, made from Chardonnay, Viognier and the local Obeidi and Merweh grapes, stand out for their freshness and floral, citrus aromas, sometimes touched with stone fruit such as apricot. The rosés offer a lively, fruity profile. The reds pair well with grilled meats and spiced dishes, while the whites suit fish, seafood and vegetable-based mezze.
