DOCG Barolo D.O.C.G. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Denominazione di origine controllata e garantita

The Barolo D.O.C.G. appellation lies in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, in the province of Cuneo. Its production zone covers eleven communes: Barolo, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d'Alba in their entirety, together with parts of La Morra, Monforte d'Alba, Novello, Verduno, Grinzane Cavour, Diano d'Alba, Cherasco and Roddi. The vineyards are planted on hillsides between 170 and 540 metres above sea level. The climate is continental, shielded by the Alps, with cold winters and warm summers; the marked swing between day and night temperatures supports the grape's aromatic development. Nebbiolo is the only grape variety permitted. The soils fall into two distinct geological groups: bluish, sandier marls in the communes of Barolo and La Morra, and grey-brown marls, more compact and calcareous, in Serralunga d'Alba, Monforte d'Alba and Castiglione Falletto, which gives Nebbiolo clearly different expressions depending on its origin.

The wines of this appellation

Barolo D.O.C.G. produces only red wines, made entirely from Nebbiolo. Their colour is garnet red, taking on orange hues with age. The nose is broad and complex, marked by faded rose, violet, cherry, raspberry, sweet spice, tobacco, licorice, leather and undergrowth. On the palate they are dry, full-bodied, robust and austere in their youth, with firm tannins and lively acidity that soften after extended ageing in wood followed by bottle age. These are wines built for cellaring, able to improve for many years, sometimes several decades in the most structured vintages. They pair with braised red meats, game, mushroom and white truffle dishes, and long-matured hard cheeses.
