Barbera d'Asti D.O.C.G. Superiore wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

The Barbera d'Asti appellation covers the hills of Piedmont, across the provinces of Asti and Alessandria, comprising 116 communes in the Asti area and 51 in the Alessandria area. The vineyards lie across a hilly landscape, mostly between 150 and 400 metres of altitude, on well-exposed slopes of the Monferrato and Astigiano hills. The soils combine clay-limestone marls, known locally as terre bianche, with older marine sands called sabbie astiane. The climate is temperate with continental influences, giving the vines favourable sunshine for ripening. The barbera grape dominates the blend, with a minimum share of 90%, the remainder coming from other non-aromatic red varieties authorised within the zone. Within this same appellation, the Superiore designation applies to wines that undergo a longer ageing period, giving them greater structure and ageing potential than the standard version.

The wines of this appellation

The Superiore designation applies only to red wines, produced after an extended ageing period that includes time spent in wood, giving them more roundness and complexity than the standard version of the appellation. Their colour is deep ruby, turning toward garnet with age. The nose is intense, opening on cherry, plum and dark berry aromas, later developing spice, liquorice, cocoa and undergrowth notes with time. On the palate they are dry, full-bodied and warm, carried by the barbera grape's natural acidity and by present yet supple tannins, with good length. Their ageing potential exceeds that of the standard Barbera d'Asti and can extend over several years. These wines pair with red meats, grilled dishes, stews, game and aged or blue-veined cheeses.
