The Atlantique appellation spans five departments in south-western France: Gironde, Charente, Charente-Maritime, Dordogne, and part of Lot-et-Garonne. The production area covers about 1,674 hectares. The soils are limestone, sandy or clay, and the oceanic climate is shaped by the proximity of major rivers and the warming influence of Gulf Stream currents. More than two hundred grape varieties are authorised, the dominant ones being merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and cot for red and rosé wines, and sauvignon, semillon and ugni blanc for white wines. Atlantique is the only protected geographical indication covering the Gironde department, giving a geographical identity to wines that cannot claim a Bordeaux appellation of origin. This territory is far larger than the neighbouring communal appellations, bringing together varied soils and microclimates.

The appellation produces still red, white and rosé wines. The reds, with a deep garnet colour, are simple and fruity. The rosés stand out for their spicier touch and pronounced freshness. The whites are lively and fresh, showing nuanced fruity aromas with floral and slightly tart notes. Made for early drinking, these wines can also be sold under the primeur or nouveau designations, underlining their immediacy and freshness. The light, fruity reds pair well with charcuterie, grilled dishes and everyday fare. The fresh, spicy rosés suit composed salads, fish and more highly seasoned dishes. The lively whites are natural partners for shellfish, seafood and grilled fish.
