Agrelo wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Agrelo is a wine district within the Luján de Cuyo department, in the province of Mendoza, Argentina, recognized as a geographical indication. Located at the foot of the Andes, it lies at an altitude of roughly 900 to 1,050 metres. Soils are deep and alluvial, ranging from sandy loam to clay, interspersed with gravel deposited by ancient rivers flowing down from the mountains. The climate is continental and semi-arid, with strong sun exposure and a marked diurnal temperature swing that allows grapes to ripen slowly while retaining acidity. Red varieties dominate plantings, led by Malbec, much of it from old vines, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah. Agrelo is distinguished from neighbouring districts such as Vistalba, Las Compuertas and Alto Agrelo by generally heavier, more clay-rich soils.

The wines of this appellation

Agrelo produces mainly red wines, led by Malbec, often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon or other Bordeaux varieties. The wines show a deep, saturated purple colour. Aromas lean toward ripe dark fruit such as blackberry, plum and black cherry, joined by notes of black pepper, violet, cedar and, after time in oak, tobacco. On the palate they are structured, with firm yet ripe tannins and a velvety texture, carried by the bright acidity that the altitude and thermal swing bring. Ageing potential is significant, with several years in bottle allowing the tannins to soften and tertiary aromas to develop. These wines pair well with grilled red meats, lamb, slow-cooked stews and aged cheeses.
