IGP Côtes de Thongue wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

I.G.P.

The Côtes de Thongue protected geographical indication covers 23 communes in the Hérault department, within the triangle formed by Faugères, Pézenas and Béziers, along the watershed of the Thongue river, which joins the Hérault at Saint-Thibéry. The vineyards lie mostly between 50 and 100 metres of altitude, across a landscape of low hills locally known as puechs. Shaped by the river's erosion, the soils combine stony terraces, sandy and gravelly marls, lacustrine limestone and clay-limestone. The climate is Mediterranean, with mild winters, hot dry summers and average annual rainfall not exceeding 600 millimetres. The range of permitted grape varieties is unusually broad, pairing traditional Mediterranean varieties such as carignan, cinsault, grenache, mourvèdre and syrah with more recently planted varieties including cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, chardonnay, sauvignon, vermentino and viognier, each suited to particular soils and exposures.

The wines of this appellation

Côtes de Thongue wines are produced in red, rosé and white, as still wines, quality sparkling wines made by second fermentation in bottle, and late-harvest wines. The wines show pronounced fruit aromas whose intensity and character vary by cuvée. Reds display a delicate structure with ripe, harmonious, fine tannins; depending on winemaking and ageing choices, they range from fruity and supple to fuller-bodied and spicy. Whites and rosés aim for a balance built on fruit and freshness, with floral notes. Lighter reds pair well with charcuterie and grilled dishes, fuller-bodied reds suit red meats and slow-cooked dishes, while whites and rosés complement fish, seafood and Mediterranean cuisine.
