A.O.C./A.O.P.

Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux is a geographic denomination attached to the Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, located on the right bank of the Dordogne, east of Saint-Émilion and Libourne. It covers nine communes: Belvès-de-Castillon, Castillon-la-Bataille, Gardegan-et-Tourtirac, Les Salles-de-Castillon, Sainte-Colombe, Saint-Genès-de-Castillon, Saint-Magne-de-Castillon, Saint-Philippe-d'Aiguille, and part of the commune of Puisseguin. The vineyards lie on south-facing hillsides where gravel soils near the Dordogne give way, on the slopes, to clay-limestone soils, and to limestone on the plateau. The climate is temperate and oceanic, as across the rest of the Bordeaux vineyard area, with good sun exposure on these hillsides. The red-wine grape varieties are mainly merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and cot (or malbec), complemented in smaller proportions by carmenère and petit verdot. Within the broader Côtes de Bordeaux family, Castillon stands out for its more pronounced relief and its position bordering Saint-Émilion.

The wines of this appellation

Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux produces still red wines only. Merlot, the dominant variety, gives the wines roundness and a velvety texture; cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon bring structure and freshness, with cot (malbec) and petit verdot completing the blend. The colour ranges from deep garnet to purple. The nose shows ripe black fruit — blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry — alongside floral and spice notes, sometimes lifted by toasted nuances when the wine is barrel-aged. On the palate, the tannins are supple and well-integrated, and the wine shows generous body without heaviness. These are wines with good aging potential, gaining complexity and roundness after a few years in bottle, though they can also be enjoyed young. They pair naturally with grilled or braised red meat, game, dishes in sauce, and matured cheeses.
