Villany wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Villány is Hungary's southernmost wine region, part of the wider Pannon wine region, close to the Croatian border. Vineyards spread across the south-facing slopes of the Villány Hills, over sixteen villages grouped into the Villány and Siklós districts. The soils rest on Triassic and Jurassic limestone and dolomite bedrock, overlaid with lime-rich loess, red clay at the base of the slopes and rendzina on higher ground, together with brown forest soils derived from chernozem. Under a sub-Mediterranean and continental climate, Villány is the warmest wine region west of the Danube, with an early spring and abundant sunshine. Red varieties dominate plantings: cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, kékfrankos and portugieser, alongside a smaller share of white varieties such as olaszrizling and hárslevelű. This pronounced red-wine character, driven by a warmer climate than its neighbours, sets Villány apart within the Pannon wine region.

The wines of this appellation

Villány is known above all for full-bodied red wines, rich in tannin and colour, with a deep, dense robe. Their aromatic profile centres on ripe fruit and spice, moving toward dried fruit and jam notes with age, supported by oak ageing on the finest cuvées. Cabernet franc, the region's signature variety, yields complex, elegant and full-structured wines with good ageing potential. Smaller volumes of white, rosé and sparkling wines are also produced. The most structured reds pair well with red meat, game and matured cheeses, while lighter styles suit charcuterie and poultry.
